It is difficult talking to your aging parents about changes.

Maybe they aren’t eating properly, their house is unusually dirty or they are mis-managing their medications.

Talking with parents about changes can be tough but its better to have the conversation before a crisis occurs so planning ahead is key. Keep in mind that what you are discussing will take more than one conversation, your loved ones will need time to process and accept that they require more assistance.

General guidelines

  • Organize your thoughts by writing a list of important points.
  • Accentuate that there aren’t “right” or “wrong” decisions.

Put yourself in their shoes.

  • Let them talk and listen, even if you don’t agree with their point of view.

Who will be there and when will this happen?

  • Include everyone in the family who is relevant to this discussion.
  • Plan for ample time to discuss in a safe place where your parents can focus on the conversation.

Do a trial run.

  • If you are nervous about speaking with your parents consider reaching out to a professional prior to the conversation to discuss your strategy.

Start casual conversations that you can build on for more decision-focused conversations at a later date.

  • Perhaps mention an aging friend or family member. Encourage them to share their wishes, let them know it would give you peace of mind to have a plan in place just in case you need it.
